School workshops in response to Rana Begum’s sculpture

June-July 2022

Akademi, English National Ballet and The Line  joined hands to create an engagement programme for local schools and communities, in response to Rana Begum’s sculptural installation No. 1104 Catching Colour at London City Island.

Fusing ballet and Kathak, our Associate Artist Parbati Chaudhury and ENB’s Kirsten Ho co‑delivered a series of workshops for 40 KS3 pupils from St. Angela’s Ursuline School and Mulberry School for Girls culminating in the creation of an outdoor dance piece Aamad by the group.

It brought together Kathak, ballet and contemporary dance in a celebration of culture, community and contrast. The live music was composed by flautist Praveen Prathapan and Gurdain Singh Rayatt.

Aamad was performed by the pupils on 21 July 2022 under the sculpture at London City Island.

The process was documented in a film by London Film School graduate and released by South Asian Heritage Month 2022 Catching Colour | Rana Begum visual artist | English National Ballet and Akademi | Aamad
