New collab with The University of Southern Mississippi
January 2025
We have entered an exciting international collaboration with The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). Following a successful workshop in London this past summer, Akademi’s Artistic Director Suba travelled to Mississippi in January 2025 to engage dance students in a two-week intensive exploration of Plastic Drastic Fantastic—Akademi’s critically acclaimed production.
This project is supported in part by funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

In London, the university’s dance students had the opportunity to participate in a day-long workshop with Suba exploring Bharata Natyam and how we create dance outdoors and in our landscapes. This January, she will build on that experience, working closely with the students to create a 30 minute version of Plastic Drastic Fantastic.
The collaboration will culminate in a production by the students for local primary school pupils, and a school for deaf children. To enhance the accessibility of the performance, Akademi will incorporate its specially designed sensory cushions, ensuring a rich, inclusive experience for the pupils.
Suba will also be presenting a work called “And Me” which will be a presentation and a work in progress – the culmination of 25 years of exploration into South Asian dance, science and the ever-evolving relationship between the self and the world.
Through the interplay of fluid physicality and innovative digital artistry the work in progress delves into the concept of duality – where the self stands at the crossroads of culture and individuality, self-image and authenticity and personal relationships and inner truths.
In a world confronted by the urgent threat of climate change, we believe art can offer a powerful platform to inspire and empower individuals, especially students, to work towards a more sustainable future. This collaboration is a celebration of cultural exchange, creativity, and accessibility, offering students and audiences a meaningful way to engage with South Asian dance and its contemporary relevance in exploring topical issues such as climate change.
We’re excited to share updates and moments from Suba’s visit in January—stay tuned!
