Songs That Move Us (2024)

Songs That Move Us is a music and dance project from THAMES (Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Education services) for KS2 students in Tower Hamlets.

Taking dance as the central theme, the project will explore and embrace how the different rhythms and beats in songs inspire us to move and sing. Songs That Move Us highlights global songs that are connected to the young people of Tower Hamlets and their communities.

Akademi shall deliver a series of nine weekly workshops at Bigland Green Primary School in the Tower Hamlets neighbourhood, involving two Year 5 classes. The lead artist, Showmi Das, will focus specifically on South Asian dance and culture with a focus on co-creation, inviting participants to bring their own stories, ideas and histories into the creation process.

The workshops will culminate in a public sharing at Shoreditch Town Hall on Tuesday, 25 June 2024. Running alongside the music and dance elements, Bigland Green will deliver a visual art project with the aim to train pupils to create and design their own costumes, that could then be worn for the performance!
