Intergenerational Project – Bollywood for All
Dance Well provides regular opportunities across the Borough of Camden, for older adults to attend dance and movement sessions, partnering with charity organisations, care homes, day centres and hospitals, as well as community learning and education providers. Akademi’s Education and Community department also works in schools across the borough, and this Bollywood Intergenerational project provides an opportunity to bring together these two areas of work and provide an opportunity to explore a new experience together.
Bollywood For All is run in collaboration with Holborn Community Association and will provide 6 hours of Bollywood classes for older adults attending Millman Street Community Centre. A separate series of workshops will be run with the younger people attending Ballet classes at Bedford House. These two groups will then come together to choreograph a Bollywood performance to be shared with the local community as part of Camden Kala, Camden Intergenerational Festival and Bloomsbury Festival.
Not only will this project bring together different ages, but also in a context of learning an entirely new dance style. Many young people and older adults will not have previously experienced Bollywood dance and music. They will experience this new activity together, learning together as equals and incorporating all cultures, backgrounds and movement abilities; breaking down barriers, and fostering new, creative partnerships.
The workshops will be led by Archita Kumar, a British-born Kathak dancer who has been performing professionally for the last 16 years.
