Workshop for 2nd West Hampstead Brownies, 11 Mar

On 11 March, artist Kavya Iyer performed and led an hour-long South Asian dance workshop for the 2nd West Hampstead Brownies Girl Guides in Hampstead, welcoming girls aged 7–14.

In the spirit of the Brownies programme, which encourages fun alongside the development of new skills, the session was lively, creative and full of energy. Kavya opened with a Bollywood performance, before inviting the girls to join in and learn choreography for themselves.

Alongside picking up new dance steps, participants took part in a creative task exploring the various elements of Bollywood as a dance style, its origins, its characteristic movements that make it so distinctive and joyful. The girls also had the opportunity to share their own existing knowledge of Bollywood dancing and contribute their own creative movements to the session, making it a truly collaborative experience.

It was a wonderful evening, bringing the joy of South Asian dance to a new young audience.
