Kopal

A playful dance project for children

Kopal, which means “young bud” or “plant” in Hindi, is an innovative, playful dance project aiming to re‑enliven physical creativity in some of London’s most underrepresented and under serviced children, bringing primary-aged pupils together. The workshops foster a strong sense of community and help develop confidence in movement work.

Through South Asian Dance with its strong characteristics of storytelling, rhythm, movement, and gesture, Akademi will take pupils on a journey of exploration, helping to meet physical activity guidelines and curriculum criteria.

Kopal can help schools find creative ways of addressing:

  • Increase levels of engagement in physical activity to meet the Chief Medical Officer guidelines of at least 60 minutes per day for children and young people aged 5–18
  • provide staff with professional development in facilitating dance and creative movement activities
  • Introduce new dance styles across a range of genres and cultures which may not be otherwise included in the curriculum
  • Support and involve the least active children by providing targeted activities including dance for those who may not be interested sports.

Schools can utilise their PE and Sports Premium to book dance activity and help:

  • Obesity and meeting physical activity guidelines.
  • Pupil anxiety and stress through creativity and mindful movement.
  • Improved focus and concentration.
  • Meeting key National Curriculum guidelines for movement literacy such as developing balance, agility and co-ordination.
