An Evening of Vibrance, Voices, and Visions
On 19 August, King’s College London hosted a captivating evening celebrating South Asian Heritage Month. The event showcased the rich tapestry of South Asian culture.
Attendees were immersed in the world of Bharatanatyam, one of India’s oldest classical dance forms, by Akademi artist Aishani Ghosh. The performance highlighted the intricate hand gestures, expressive eye movements, and rhythmic footwork that define this timeless art. The audience was transported through the dance form’s history and evolution, by an introduction narrated by Aishani.
The evening offered a diverse program. Powerful speakers inspired the audience, while captivating performances, including a dynamic display by a female dhol drummer group and a special dance performance by Vinay Jobanputra, from Bollyqueer, enthralled the crowd. A highlight was an engaging interview and Q&A with Hamisha Daryani Ahuja, the acclaimed director of ‘Namaste Wahala’. The event also featured a captivating reading and Q&A session with the author of ‘Not Your Expected Hijabi’.
The event was part of South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM), a celebration of the significant contributions of South Asian communities to British society. A dedicated presentation provided insights into SAHM and its impact.
