DAKSHINA (2018)
DAKSHINA packs a punch with breath-taking performances from two leading classical Indian dancers in the UK, Kamala Devam and Elena Catalano, accompanied by live musicians.
iFirst presented at Rich Mix, Friday 20 April 2018.
With Odissi dancer Elena Catalano’s grace and sinuous attention to detail complemented by Kamala Devam’s athleticism and vigour in Bharatanatyam, this virtuosic duo pay homage to their gurus and the Divine in an evening of exceptional dance and live music.
In Kamala’s repertoire, witness an offering of dance and poetry to five main Gods of Hinduism, the yearnings of a young heroine in love with Lord Shiva, and a bold new piece bringing dance and music into parity on stage. Elena will show the rhythmic intricacies and the gestural refinement of Odissi through pieces containing abstract dance and storytelling.
Also experience the premiere of Kamala Devam’s debut Bharatanatyam choreographic piece – based on the classic Jatiswaram – before it goes on tour.
