Chipko Artwork

1993

An artwork image from the Chipko project run by Akademi in 1993. This is available also as an A3 sized poster / photocopy. The image features people and animals in harmony with trees, in a traditional tribal style painting.

Context

In this context, ‘Chipko’ is used to mean ‘hug’ or ‘embrace’. The project was inspired by the Chipko Movement in Northern India, a forest conservation project that advocated for the saving of trees and increased awareness of indigenous and tribal people’s welfare. Women were the backbone to this movement, which is now increasingly seen as an ecofeminism movement. Chipko was Akademi’s first theme-based education project that was tailored to the National Curriculum. Workshops guided pupils through Indian dance  environmental issues.
