Chandenie Gobardhan

Akademi Artist Commissions recipient, Chandenie Gobardhan, shares the creative journey behind her new dance piece, Caught Again In The Net of Rebirth, and where it’s headed next.

When the seeds of Caught Again In The Net of Rebirth (CAITNOR) were planted about four years ago, I could only dream of how it’s taking form now. It’s been a slow, layered process of research and reflection, which continues to evolve through each collaboration. As CAITNOR continues to move from research into production, the process has become a space for deep listening to inner guidance for all aspects – lights, sound, choreography, and to the conversation between them.

Working closely with the dancers has been central at this stage of development. Each rehearsal has opened new pathways for interpreting the stories being told in this work through gesture and breath, finding a shared vocabulary that balances precision and freedom. The dancers’ individual textures and instincts are shaping the work’s overall
composition, creating something both personal and collective.

The collaboration (or what I like to call collaborationship haha) with composer Torben has expanded the works world beyond imagination. Together we’ve been sculpting a sound environment that doesn’t just support the choreography but makes it live beyond the walls of any space we’re in. Sometimes leading, sometimes following, often disrupting. This dialogue between us has revealed unexpected moments of tension, stillness, and release.

“Akademi’s imprint is present not only in the infrastructure and support but in the values that underpins this process. A commitment to artistic care, cultural dialogue, and the evolution of South Asian dance practices within a contemporary landscape. Their encouragement to take risks and to follow intuition has been incredibly important in allowing the work to mature with integrity and depth.”

As we move towards the premiere, CAITNOR continues to evolve and unfold in off- and on-stage conversations between dancers, sound, lights and the unseen forces that connect them.
