For thirty years, we have been shaping the creative landscape for South Asian dance in the UK, developing artists, creating challenging and spectacular outdoor performances and building on our education department to continue our important role of working with a variety of funders and learners.
Our events and productions department produce and deliver great performances to suit any environment but specifically customised to complement outdoor space. 2010 will be a great testament to this with the production of Sufi:Zen following on from the success of Initium throughout 2009.
Events will such as Daredevas, which launched in 2009 at Southbank Centre and continues to tour throughout art centres and venues to provide entertaining platforms for developing solo performances in Kathak, Odissi, Bharatanatyam and other dance forms.
Our extensive development for artists continues to nurture and grow their creativity and skills particularly through the South Asian dance artform. We aim to empower young artists to determine their own futures. Akademi’s training allows our Associate Artists and Associate Choreographers to develop the skills required for pursing their professional goals.
Our Education and Community department offers work with young people, adults and older people, those with disability or health related issues through group-led projects and outreach work for segments such as Family Learning which was introduced in 2010 as part of The Big Lottery funding award.
We also work with schools to deliver projects related to their objectives of engaging with students, encouraging them to participate in projects which can benefit their social skills, their eagerness to learn more and move into further education or training, providing them with an insight and motivation to embrace their skills.
Providing work for the corporate sector and through bespoke performances as requested by private clients, allows us to be creative in all aspects of our work. Through such requests we have been privileged to work with some amazing organisations, including the Royal Household for the 2010 Queen’s Baton Relay launch.
Such flexibility of being able to adapt to new challenges and willingness to work with new funders and partners, allows us to continuously develop new projects and implement work we are extremely proud of.
