Katie Ryan - Kalpavriksha

Katie Ryan - Kalpavriksha

Combining stability and vitality trees form the backdrop to our daily existence. Reaching out in all directions to weave a canopy above and a winding network below, they represent a link between the earthy and the spiritual and can become the focus of pilgrimage, thanks-giving and wish-making in many cultures. The ritual of tying threads around the tree entwines human hopes and desires with the majestic natural form, investing trust in the bounty of nature on which we rely for both physical and spiritual sustenance.

Three dancers using classical South Asian and contemporary movement styles explore the tradition of the Kalpavriksha - wish-giving tree as dreams take flight under the shade of its branches.

Choreographed and performed by Katie Ryan.
