London's Communities

Akademi's Initium at Queens Crescent Community Festival 2009

Akademi's London's Communities work produces participatory work in South Asian dance and related art forms in ways that are stimulating and relevant to life in London today. The work is imaginative and exploratory in its design to allow participants a better understanding of what makes London's communities so culturally thriving.

Through a four year programme, supported by London Councils, Akademi works in sixteen London boroughs, producing opportunities for residents to participate in creative learning and to be introduced to South Asian arts at performances and events.

It aims to raise awareness of the richness and diversity of contemporary South Asian culture as well ash of London's communities which it serves. Projects in the boroughs of Lambeth and Newham, for example, worked with primary and secondary schools to enactstories of diverse cultural heritage and explored issues of refuge and refugees through dance, music and poetry to stress the vitality of cultural diversity.
