Family Learning

Family Learning Project

Akademi has been supported by The Big Lottery Fund since 2009 to engage  families in Brent in Barnet in an innovative programme of learning  activities. Parents, carers and children aged between 9 and 16 had the opportunity to work together to deepen their understanding the diverse cultural heritage existing in their families and communities, whilst  at the same time enjoy spending time sharing and learning new skills  together.

Activities in the sessions included dance, story telling, drama, music and arts and crafts. These were then followed by performances at local events and festivals such as the Kilburn Park Grange Festival and ‘Brent Celebrates the Flame’, a day of festivities celebrating the London 2012 Olympic games.

The project was also awarded an ‘Inspire Mark’ in July 2012 for helping to bring  the spirit of the games to the community, and our vibrant Olympic banners are currently on display at Brent Museum as part  of their London 2012 display.

Alongside the workshop activities Akademi also produced resources with  creative project ideas for the home and sent out E-newsletters, signposting families to further learning opportunities, events and  activities in their local area.

To continue our work with families, Akademi have produced an online  interactive progression map filled with ideas, down loadable resources and signposts to local opportunities.
