PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & TRAINING
Promoting Excellence Within The Profession
Through its dance production, professional development and training work, Akademi nurtures creativity and encourages excellence in the presentation of South Asian dance as well as in the professional development and training of the South Asian dancer.
It provides a range of activities, driven by the needs of artists, to encourage and enhance their practice and lifelong learning within the context of developments in the wider UK dance world. Specific activities include producing innovative, large-scale South Asian dance productions; working in partnership with training providers to develop opportunities to study South Asian dance at all levels; managing a flexible programme of workshops, seminars and intensives designed to enhance creativity and bring artists together to share their work and ideas; providing administrative support and training for the professional artist.
Training
Akademi recognises the importance of widely available, high quality training to the long-term survival and development of all art forms. It works in partnership with key training providers towards establishing and improving new and existing training provision in South Asian dance.
Professional Development
Akademi works to support and sustain the professional development of UK-based South Asian dancers, believing that when artists have opportunities to continually develop and grow, the art form benefits. It supports artists at all levels, from those just entering the profession to those with many years of experience, and works across all styles of South Asian dance, and with practitioners of traditional and contemporary forms. The department works flexibly in order to respond to the needs of individual artists and groups of artists.
Administrative Training, Advice & Support
Akademi offers administrative training, advice and support through its network of arts and dance industry consultants. This takes the form of seminars, one-to one advice surgeries, work shadowing opportunities, mentoring, coaching and the sharing of practice, knowledge and ideas.
Akademi's programme of professional development activity is flexible and responsive to the needs of individual dancers and the development of the dance forms. UK-based professional South Asian dancers looking for support should contact Akademi directly to find out more about its current activities and how it might be able to help.
